SPEAK UP 2026: Empowering Student Voices for a Sustainable Future in an International Academic Environment

On the morning of May 29, 2026, the Faculty of Foreign Languages at Dong Nai Technology University (DNTU) successfully organized the Semi-final Round of SPEAK UP 2026, themed "Voices for a Sustainable Future." Conducted in a hybrid format, the competition brought together teams from Vietnam and abroad, creating a vibrant international platform for students to showcase their English communication skills and academic perspectives.

More than a traditional public speaking competition, SPEAK UP 2026 continues to affirm its role as an international academic forum where students develop English proficiency, critical thinking, teamwork, and a strong sense of global citizenship while addressing some of today's most pressing global challenges.

English as a Tool for Building a Sustainable Future

As the world faces increasingly complex challenges related to environmental sustainability, technological advancement, education, and social development, the ability to communicate effectively, express informed opinions, and participate in international dialogue has become an essential competency for university students.

Under the theme "Voices for a Sustainable Future," SPEAK UP 2026 encouraged participants to use English as a medium for presenting innovative ideas, proposing practical solutions, and inspiring positive change toward sustainable development.

The competing teams explored a wide range of timely topics, including environmental protection, technology for community development, sustainable education, social responsibility, green lifestyles, and the role of young people in shaping a better future.

Through carefully prepared presentations, contestants demonstrated not only strong English language proficiency but also a deep awareness of contemporary global issues, reflecting the qualities of responsible global citizens in today's interconnected world.

A Multicultural Academic Platform for Innovation and Dialogue

Following a preliminary round in which teams submitted introductory presentation videos, the Organizing Committee selected the most outstanding teams to advance to the semi-finals.

Each team delivered its presentation in English, combining persuasive public speaking, critical thinking, and effective teamwork. Following every presentation, contestants participated in a live question-and-answer session with the judging panel, where they defended their arguments, clarified their viewpoints, and demonstrated their ability to respond confidently to in-depth academic questions.

According to the Organizing Committee, this year's evaluation focused on academic content, presentation structure, delivery skills, time management, and the effectiveness of teamwork throughout the competition.

International Experts Inspire Academic Excellence

One of the highlights of SPEAK UP 2026 was the participation of an international panel of judges, consisting of experienced lecturers and language specialists.

hrough constructive feedback, professional evaluation, and insightful discussions, participants were introduced to international academic standards while strengthening their English communication and presentation skills in an authentic academic setting.

Beyond assessing performance, the interactions between the judges and contestants became valuable learning opportunities, enabling students to enhance their analytical thinking, academic reasoning, and problem-solving abilities.

These objectives reflect the Faculty of Foreign Languages' educational philosophy of developing students' language proficiency alongside global perspectives and intercultural competence—qualities that are increasingly essential in today's international academic and professional environments.

Looking Ahead to the Grand Final

At the conclusion of the semi-final round, the Organizing Committee selected the six highest-performing teams to advance to the Grand Final.

n the final round, contestants are expected to engage in debates and discussions on several contemporary global issues, including:

  • Is artificial intelligence an essential driver of a sustainable future?
  • Should economic growth take priority over environmental protection in developing countries?
  • Should education for sustainable development become a compulsory subject in higher education?

In addition to the debate sessions, finalists will respond to open-ended questions designed to assess their critical thinking, academic reasoning, and ability to propose practical solutions to real-world societal challenges.

SPEAK UP 2026: A Platform for the Voices of the Next Generation

SPEAK UP is far more than an English-language competition; it is a journey of academic growth, international dialogue, and personal development.

Through this signature event, DNTU continues to reaffirm its commitment to internationalized education by providing students with opportunities to strengthen their academic knowledge, English proficiency, critical thinking, and social responsibility.

In a rapidly changing world, the voices of young people who think critically, act responsibly, and inspire positive change play an essential role in shaping a more sustainable future.
